During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the achievements of Emilio Estefan: his music, his vision and the doors he has opened for generations of Latinos. But behind such a luminous career are battles the public rarely, if ever, gets to see.

I have known Emilio for years and have had the privilege of interviewing him on several occasions. In one of those conversations, he confided that he lives with attention deficit disorder. I was moved by how openly and plainly he spoke about something many men prefer to keep quiet, for fear of being judged or seen as less capable.

His story invites us to look at success through a different lens. Reaching extraordinary goals does not mean the road was easy. Nor does it turn a struggle into an advantage: every single person faces their own challenges and deserves support in meeting them.

In many Latino households, we still respond to attention or mental health struggles with a simple “focus” or “just try harder.” Yet listening with patience, learning and seeking professional guidance when needed can transform a life and bring peace of mind to an entire family. Acknowledging a struggle takes nothing away from anyone’s worth.

That is what What Men Don’t Tell is about: remembering that behind the awards, the business deals and the applause are human beings with doubts, efforts and vulnerabilities. This Hispanic Heritage Month, let us also celebrate those who dare to break the silence. Their honesty may light the way for someone else.
