The Heartthrob Who Impacts the World of Telenovelas
By: Federico Díaz and Nancy Esteves
The leading man who for years has charmed audiences with his charisma and Prince Charming appeal now takes on screen what he has called his master role in the production “El Dragón.” A challenge he faced with the same confidence with which he smiles when talking about his life and his steady relationship with actress Angelique Boyer. Rulli tells us exclusively for HL Magazine.
Tell us a little about “El Dragón” – definitely a before and after in your career.
Well yes, I have more than 20 years in my career and I have done many melodramas, comedies, family stories, and this is the first time I play such a complex character, so important to the story, and above all touching on totally controversial subjects such as drug trafficking and corruption, in difficult times for this country. I think it has arrived at a magical moment and above all leaving a positive message. These subjects have always been approached as if idolizing and giving a lot of power to these men who engage in illicit activities. But here, he wants to change that and give hope to society. Therefore, I am very proud to be part of this project. Above all, to play something I believe in as a man. I loved doing it.
What is your philosophy of life given all the media responsibility you carry? How do you keep that center?
The truth is I live only for today; I try to do things well, always enjoy to the fullest, always on the right path. I always say that he who does good, does well – thank God that is how it has gone for me. I believe in leading by example; I do not like to project one image and do another thing and then have controversy around my person. I have harmony in my life; that is what gives me that peace and tranquility.
How do you start your day? Any phrase that fires you up at the start of the day?
I do not have an exact mathematics of my days, but it is clear to me that the philosophy I have always lived by is: smile at life and life will smile back at you, and try to do things well so you look well. The truth is you should not have to face anyone, not even face yourself – try to be honest, know what your limitations are in order to push through that day.
Mexico is an important word for many of us abroad. For you specifically, what does it mean?
Well, Mexico is the place in the world where I was able to develop, to find everything, to find peace. I was able to grow as a man, I found love, my son was born there. It is the place that makes me happy; I truly believe I owe it everything. I love doing things for Mexico, I share many of this society’s philosophies of life. I am proudly Mexican by conviction.
And Argentina, the country that saw you born? It also applauds you from afar – how do you feel about that?
Well, Argentina is my roots. Evidently we have traditions that gave me foundations and values which, today, I consider the basic tools to be who I am, and the example of my family who are Argentine – they now live in Spain but have always carried those roots very strongly; that is where I grew with my dreams and it gave me that strength to travel, achieve and find the path.
Angelique Boyer, with whom you share this complex path of life – is she also a goal achieved for you?
I believe love is what moves the world and every human being. No matter race, color, nationality, age – we are always looking for love. So if you have everything and never knew love, you are not in love, I think that is an enormous emptiness. I am fortunate to have found the person who makes me happy, for whom I go out of my way and worry about making happy, and to share a dream, a path, to have dreams together, to share our work, to enjoy each other’s success. I am the happiest man in the world sharing with the person I love, of whom I like everything.
And being a dad changed your life too, right?
Santi is what put my feet on the ground. It is the way to focus a future on a more solid path, more focused on what one as a man wants to leave behind, and evidently it is also a responsibility that makes you think things through many more times than before, and work harder too.
South Florida, Miami – what does it mean to you, where you have been for press, vacations, etc.?
Miami is a place I love to go; I truly enjoy it every time I have the chance, and I have had the fortune of setting foot in the United States for the first time through Miami. And yes, it is a place that embraces Latinos, where you feel at home, you always find compatriots, people who transmit joy to you, that Caribbean feel, and I enjoy it every time I can and I love it. So, grateful to all that Latino public in Miami that multiplies across the entire United States.
How do you see yourself in 10 years? More children?
I consider myself someone who tries to visualize himself consciously, and I know children do not depend 100% on me. I am happy, in a relationship; I see myself the rest of my life with Angie. Also now, evidently, my son is going to help me decide where to be and what to do, and which way to go, because I do not want to be far from him, and that is also a reason not to move.
Many readers surely want to know – how do you take care of yourself?
There are no secrets! The truth is the only thing that guarantees looking good in health is discipline in nutrition and exercise. It is easy: I do not drink alcohol, I eat very little flour, and sweets even less. I have my indulgence once or twice a week, or two weeks go by and I do not. But I eat very clean. I always do physical activities; I like weight training and, didactically, I always like outdoor activities. I feel I am hyperactive and I have to burn that energy beyond the gym.
Well, precisely, we always see you on the motorcycle – one of your passions.
We just got back. I took a week-long trip with my friends in Texas, we went to a rally and I rode 4,500 kilometers. Angie caught up with me by plane because at night it gets a bit boring, and not so great to go in and out of Mexico, so we did a ride together – she joined me for about 2,000 kilometers, so it was really good. And yes, she loves it, and I love having her with me enjoying my passion.
