At Mottai, Japanese precision meets contemporary Miami sophistication in a dining experience that feels both artistic and immersive. Located at The Plaza Coral Gables, the restaurant has quickly become one of the city’s newest culinary obsessions, blending refined Japanese techniques with globally inspired flavors and dramatic presentation.

Behind the concept is the Attivo Group, Brazil’s acclaimed hospitality company, making its United States debut with this Coral Gables venture. Their vision was deliberate from the start: a space where Japanese culinary discipline meets Miami’s relaxed, cosmopolitan energy. To bring that vision to life in the kitchen, they enlisted chef Brian Nasajon and sushi chef Hiroshi Shintaku — a duo that built a menu firmly rooted in Japanese technique while embracing the ingredients and flavors that speak to Miami’s diverse palate.

The Signature Dishes

Among the restaurant’s standout signature dishes is the celebrated Sugi Katsu, a delicate cobia cutlet finished with ponzu aioli, offering a lighter and elevated interpretation of the traditional Japanese katsu. Equally memorable is the American Wagyu Rib-Eye, served with shiso tempura and tare sauce, balancing richness with precision.

Seafood lovers gravitate toward the elegant Hamachi Sashimi with white soy ponzu, the flavorful Spicy Shrimp, and the interactive Kinoko Hot Pot — prepared tableside with mushrooms, yuzu soy butter, egg yolk, furikake, and chili crunch over steamed rice.

Other signature favorites include the Black Garlic Chicken with carrot purée and charred scallions, the indulgent Mottai Crispy Chicken with pickled watermelon and chili sauce, and the beautifully prepared Black Cod with caramelized cauliflower, yuzu soy, and den miso. The sushi counter showcases premium nigiri, toro, uni, and the coveted Hotate Caviar Temaki, all crafted with exceptional attention to detail.

With its chic French Japonisme-inspired interiors, couture-level plating, and ingredient-driven menu, Mottai delivers more than dinner — it offers a curated culinary journey where every dish is designed to surprise, seduce, and impress. But I was truly impressed by their Wasabi Martini! Outstanding!

Mottai Miami is located at 2881 Ponce de Leon Blvd, Coral Gables, FL 33134 within The Plaza Coral Gables development.
