Cenotes, are water-filled sinkholes that naturally occur in limestone rock when an underground cave collapses in on itself and exposes the groundwater underneath. There are thousands of cenotes dotted around the Yucatan Peninsula. The water in the cenotes tends to be cool as the water comes from underground. Cenote Zapote: At Cenote Zapote you can swim, snorkel, swing from zip lines, a bike ride through the jungle, try authentic Yucatecan food, and relax in hammocks, a day full of action.
Zapote is one of the best cenotes near Cancun, just a few miles to the south there is a turn-off called ‘La ruta de los cenotes’. Most of the well-known cenote tours take place along this stretch and many of the cenotes are connected.
