Elsy Rivas arrived in Miami in 1989 with little more than her dreams, determination, limited English and a simple conviction: the cooking of her homeland deserved a seat at the city’s table. At a time when Cuban cuisine set the tone and El Salvador was largely absent from Miami’s culinary map, she saw that gap as an opportunity.

The daughter of small-business owners, she learned early that steady, honest work opens doors. With that lesson in hand, she launched a modest family business on limited resources, backed by her mother and sisters, who helped prepare hard-to-find ingredients back in El Salvador.

The early years demanded patience. Rivas was introducing flavors many customers had never tasted, and she won them over with persistence and a warmth that made every diner feel like a guest in her home.

That effort became El Atlacatl, a place where Salvadoran heritage can be seen, smelled and savored. Each dish tells the story of where her family comes from and connects those roots to the city she now calls home.

Decades later, looking back on the road she has traveled, Rivas holds on to the humility of her beginnings. Her legacy is measured not only in the years of a restaurant, but in every person who discovers a Salvadoran flavor for the first time and carries a piece of her culture with them. Her stage is the table; her greatest pride, that Miami now knows a little more about the country where she was born.
