Cuida tu cerebro

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BRAIN

When was the last time you did something to support the health of your brain? It is not surprising to realize that we never dedicate time to plan what we can do to keep our brains healthy, oxygenated, hydrated and youthful. The brain is a vital organ, fundamental to the central nervous system, it is the main seat of consciousness, memory, reasoning, understanding and intellect. It processes thought through complex neuromagnetic, neuroelectrical and biochemical responses. Like any other organ in our body, the brain is exposed to toxicity, degeneration and decay. Early symptoms of this manifest when we start forgetting things, when we experience an inadequate response to challenges or when we notice our decision-making process has become sluggish in our decision-making process.
Ayurveda promotes a specific rasayana (rejuvenation therapy) that benefits the brain and its processes. There are three herbs in the Ayurvedic apothecary that have complemented a healthy diet since ancient times to promote a healthy brain:
• Brahmi – enhances memory, improves cerebral circulation and prolongs cellular life
• Jatamamsi – improves cognitive function of the brain cells and promotes tranquility
• Shankha-pushpi – supports cellular respiration and communication Additionally, recommended practices that can help rejuvenate our brain include:
• Regular exercise to improve blood flow to the brain
• Memorization of poems and songs to support memory faculty
• Intentionally include new words in your vocabulary
• Eat food rich in beta carotene – carrots, dark vegetables and certain fruits
• Include in your diet walnuts, almonds, cashews and grains such as amaranth
• Yoga poses like shoulder stand, plough and sun salutation
• Pranayama (conscious breathing exercise) must be performed every day to bring adequate amounts of oxygen into our brain
There are twelve cranial nerves that also require nourishment. Massage and the stimulation of certain marma points (energy points in face and skull) can really make a big difference to help us reduce stress, increase our alertness and experience a state of bliss.
