Mariana Vega nos lleva adentro de su “Burbuja”

La estrella en ascenso del sur de la Florida Mariana Vega, cantautora e instrumentalista del género pop latino originaria de Caracas Venezuela, tiene una voz verdaderamente angelical. Recientemente Mariana recibió el premio Mejor Nuevo Artista del Latin Grammy 2014 y su álbum Mi Burbuja, fue nominado el Mejor Álbum de Pop Vocal Contemporáneo. Álbum producido junto al famoso Cacharro López. Todo esto y sin mencionar que ha sido artista platino dos veces en Venezuela.
A pesar que nació y se crio en Caracas, Mariana se mudó a Toronto a los 15 años de edad para estudiar en la Universidad de Toronto. Fue en Canadá donde comenzó afilar sus habilidades musicales. Descubrieron el talento de la cantautora, luego de presentarse en la boda de su primo en Venezuela.
Además de tener una voz celestial, Mariana toca piano, la guitarra, el cuatro, el ukulele y la flauta. Por haber vivido tanto en Venezuela como en Canadá antes de mudarse a Miami, fue influenciada por distintos artistas, géneros y culturas. Hoy, su música refleja su estilo y sonido único que puede ser descrito como una mezcla entre el pop latino y rock alternativo.
Actualmente Mariana vive en Miami, donde el mes pasado realmente ayudó con el espectáculo del concierto de la Celebración del Centenario de la ciudad de Miami Beach junto a Gloria Estefan, Barry Gibb y Andrea Bocelli. Ella también realizó un concierto para su nuevo álbum “Mi Burbuja”, en Flamingo Theater en Brickell, como parte de su tour. México, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Canadá fueron algunas paradas anteriores del tour.
El 2015 seguirá siendo un año de gran éxito para Mariana mientras termina el tour de “Mi Burbuja”, trabaja en su siguiente álbum y se presenta en los eventos más grandes de toda América Latina. En mayo, se presentará en el concierto culminante de Human Rights Week, semana de los derechos humanos en la Ciudad de México. En agosto estará en escenarios del Megafest de Bogotá. Esta ocupadísima joven artista, se unirá al One Billion Rising Revolution, movimiento que lucha para acabar con la violencia hacia la mujer en todo el mundo.
Entrevista con Hola Latinos:
• ¿Aparte de tener una voz espectacular también tocas diferentes instrumentos, ¿cuántos en total?
Toco cinco instrumentos: Piano, guitarra, la flauta dulce, cuatro y ukulele. Pero prefiero siempre la guitarra que es con la que puedo viajar y es mucho más cómoda y el piano que desde niña ha sido mi favorito pero como no puedo viajar con el(risas) ya no lo puedo tocar tanto.

• De tus 4 discos ¿cuál fue el más divertido de crear? ¿Y qué video musical?
El disco que más he disfrutado es ‘”Mi Burbuja” que es mi disco más reciente. Es un disco en que me atreví a hacer realmente el género que quería hacer e irme un poco más al lado alternativo en vez del POP sin preocuparme tanto de que es bueno para la radio o que es comercial, El disco me ha dado mucho éxito porque fui nominada y ganadora del Latin Grammy como mejor Artista Nuevo. Mis videos favoritos son dos: “Mi Burbuja” que es el video del primer sencillo de este nuevo disco. Este video lo hice con mi mejor amiga del colegio con quien me encontré después de mucho tiempo y fue una experiencia muy divertida. Es un video muy “vintage” como una parodia de una mujer que se va de viaje en un avión y ella misma es el piloto pero a su vez plancha, cocina, se maquilla… todo lo hace en el avión. El otro video es “De tu Voz” que es el segundo sencillo del nuevo disco. Este tiene una historia mucho más densa, se desarrolla en blanco y negro y se trata de una pelea de boxeo con mi supuesto ex.

• ¿Como fue trabajar con un productor tan reconocido como Cachorro López? ¿Tienes alguna historia simpática de sus grabaciones?
¡Con él fue increíble! La verdad es que siempre admiré su trabajo. Sobre todo como cantautora me sentí especial porque él ha trabajado con artistas como Julieta Venegas y Miranda. Tuve un poco de miedo al llegar al estudio porque estaba intimidada con tanto talento y tanta experiencia pero él me hizo sentir en casa completamente. Un cuento gracioso fue que tanto Cachorro, Sebastian Schon (co-productor) y yo sufrimos de la espalda y tenemos fotos de sesiones de la grabación donde los tres estamos muy mal, tenemos episodios de dolor de espalda, de hernias discales y estamos los tres en el piso conversando sobre el disco y descansando del largo trabajo pero no nos podemos mover ninguno de los tres. Fue horrible pero también muy chistoso.

• Tienes un estilo musical único. ¿Cuáles artistas te han inspirado más en tu vida? ¿Y cuáles son tus géneros musicales favoritos?
Mi género favorito siempre ha sido lo más acústico donde se oye la guitarra sin muchos adornos. Me gusta mucho Dave Matthews, Counting Crows, The Decemberists. Pero escucho de todo un poco porque en el mercado latino en Venezuela escuchamos mucho la balada pop: Verenas, Shakira. Luego cuando me mude a Canadá descubrí a Nelly Furtado, Jewel. Me encanta esa mezcla de la mujer como cabeza de su proyecto que fue lo que vi en Alanis Morisette y Nelly Furtado, mezclada un poco con la balada pop latino.

• Ya que has logrado tanto (como ganar un Latin Grammy y varios otros reconocimientos). ¿Cuál es tu meta para el 2015?
Para este año lo que me tiene más ilusionada y en lo que me estoy enfocando es en la gira. Ya tuve la oportunidad de estar en Argentina, Chile, Los Angeles, Mexico, Venezuela y seguirá en Bogotá, Perú, Ecuador y Canadá. Pero a mediano plazo tengo muchas ganas de hacer terapia musical para combinar las dos cosas que me gustan (psicología y la música) para más adelante grabar un disco para niños con enfermedades como el autismo. Quisiera lograr que mi música sea utilizada como una forma de terapia.

• ¿Como te involucraste en “One Billion Rising Revolution”? Y, ¿cuál es el mensaje más importante que deseas compartir con el mundo?
Hay una estadística que no es bien conocida por lo general pero es muy importante: una de cada tres mujeres es víctima de alguna forma de abuso. Quiere decir que hay 1 billón de mujeres que están en riesgo. Falta que esa estadística se sepa y que las mujeres entiendan que no tienen que tener pena o sentirse culpables. Este grupo de One Billion Rising apoya a estas mujeres en la transición para que salgan de relaciones y situaciones abusivas. Mientras pueda ayudar a llevar este mensaje y lograr que las mujeres no se sientan tan solas creo que estoy aportando.

Winner Best New Artist Latin Grammy

South Florida local and rising star Mariana Vega is a Latin Pop singer/songwriter and Instrumentalist from Caracas, Venezuela with a truly angelic voice. Mariana was recently awarded the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist in 2014 and her latest album which she produced alongside the famous Cacharro Lopez, Mi Burbuja, was nominated for Best Vocal Contemporary Pop Album. Not to mention she’s also a double platinum recording artist in Venezuela.
Although she was born and raised in Caracas, Mariana moved to Toronto at age 15 and later studied at the University of Toronto. It was in Canada where she began to hone her musical skills. The singer/songwriter was later discovered when she performed at her cousins wedding back in Venezuela.
Besides having a heavenly voice, this talented musician can also play the piano, guitar, ukulele, the Latin instrument “cuatro,” as well as the recorder. Having lived in both Venezuela and Canada before moving to Miami, she’s been influenced by many different artists, genres and cultures. Today, her music reflects her very unique style and sound which can be described as a mix of Latin Pop and Alternative Rock that’s heavy on the acoustics.
Mariana currently lives in Miami and actually helped ring in the Miami Beach’s Centennial celebration at the Hard Rock Rising Miami concert alongside Gloria Estefan, Barry Gibb and Andrea Bocelli last month. She also held a concert for her new album Mi Burbuja at the Flamingo Theater in Brickell as part of her album tour which also includes stops in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Canada and more.
And 2015 will continue to be a hugely successful year for Mariana as she completes the Mi Burbuja tour, works on her next album and performs at some of the biggest events throughout Latin America. In May, Mariana will appear in the culmination concert for the Human Rights Week in Mexico City. She’ll also grace the stage in Bogota’s famous Megafest in August. This busy young artist has also joined the One Billion Rising revolution which fights to end violence against women all around the world.

Interview: (translation)
• Aside from having a spectacular voice, you also play different instruments, how many in total?

I play five instruments. I play piano, guitar, flute, cuatro and ukulele. But I always prefer the guitar as I can travel with it. Piano has been my favorite since childhood but as I can’t travel with it (laughing), so I can’t play it very often.

• Of your singles, which was the most fun to create? And music video?
The song I’ve enjoyed most is ”Mi Burbuja (My Bubble)” and it’s my most recent. It’s an album that I dared to create the kind of music I wanted and went a little further on the alternative music side inside instead of POP without worrying so much that is good for radio or that it’s sellable, the single gave me a lot of success because I was nominated and won the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. My favorite videos are twofold: “(Mi Burbuja) My Bubble” is the video of the first single from my new album. I did it with my best friend from school with whom I met after a long time and it was a lot of fun. It’s a very “vintage” type video and is a parody of a woman who goes on a plane trip and she is actually the pilot, and she also irons, cooks, puts on makeup … she does it all on the plane. The other video is “De Tu Voz (From Your Voice)” is the second single from the new album. It was made in black and white and is about a boxing match with my supposed ex.

• What was it like working with such a renowned producer like Cachorro López ? Do you have some nice story about your recordings?
With him it was amazing! The truth is that I always admired his work. Especially as a songwriter I felt great because he has worked with artists like Julieta Venegas and Miranda. I was a little afraid to get to the studio because I was a little intimidated his incredible talent and experience but he made me feel completely at home. A funny story was that both Cachorro, Sebastian Schon (co-producer) and I suffer from back pains and I have photos during my recording sessions where all three of us are feeling really bad, we have episodes of back pain, herniated discs and were all the three on the floor talking about my song and resting after our long hours but all three of us just couldn’t move. It was horrible but also very funny.

• You have a unique musical style. What artists have inspired you most? And what are your favorite music genres?
My favorite genre has always been the most acoustical where guitar sound is heard without many frills. I like Dave Matthews, Counting Crows, The Decemberists. But I listen to a little of everything because in the Latin market in Venezuela we hear here a lot of pop ballad: Verenas, Shakira. Then when I moved to Canada, I discovered Nelly Furtado, Jewel. I love the mix of women as head of their project which is was what I saw with Alanis Morisette and Nelly Furtado, mixed with a little Latin pop ballad.

• You have already achieved so much (like winning a Latin Grammy and several other awards). What is your goal for 2015?
This year I am really excited and focused on my tour. I’ve had the opportunity to be in Argentina, Chile, Los Angeles, Mexico, Venezuela and will continue on to Bogota, Peru, Ecuador and Canada. But I really want to do music therapy to combine the two things I love (psychology and music) to later record an album for children diseases such as autism. I really want my music to be used as a form of therapy.
How did you get involved in “One Billion Rising Revolution”? And what is the most important message you want to share with the world?
There are statistics that are very important: one in three women is a victim of some form of abuse. It means that there are 1 billion women are at risk. Women need to understand that they don’t have to be ashamed or feel guilt. This group, “One Billion Rising” supports these women in the transition of leaving abusive relationships and situations. While I can help bring this message to help women not feel so alone, I think I can contribute something.
